To begin with, English can be considered as the most significant language because it is used as a lingua franca. According to Lenon (2009) a lingua franca is a language which is used to communicate by people with different language background. Indeed, English is clearly a lingua franca since it is used to communicate by people in the world. For one example, English is used in some Japanese universities as the formal language in the campus. For another example, English is also spoken by members of the United Nation. Therefore, people should be able to speak and understand English to be able to communicate with people from other countries.

 

Furthermore, English is also vital since it becomes the internet language. Bieber(2011) reports that English makes up 80 % of information in the internet.   This means that most of the information in the internet is written in English. For this reason, internet users should understand English if they want to benefit the existence of the internet.

 

Next, because of the existence of the internet language, English can also be considered as a language for knowledge enhancement and dissemination. In fact, there is abundant of information in the internet. For example, students can find many journal articles in the internet as resources for their study. Teachers can also locate a great number of teaching materials in the internet. Additionally, all people can obtain some articles to enhance their skills. By typing the keywords in the search Engine, people can improve their knowledge on management, leadership, teamwork, international language. Such practical tips as how to be an effective mother, how to be an effective speaker and other ‘how to’ knowledge is also widely provided in the internet. Due to this fact, Bell (2010) argues that everyone can be smart without school if they want to learn from the internet. Similarly, Icon (2011) also maintains that Internet becomes the greatest learning resources in the 21st century.

 

Finally, many people agree that English will help people to succeed in their jobs. Particularly, English is used by multinational company to interview their employee candidates and to communicate in the company. In fact, all multinational companies hold job interview in English. Those companies think that being able to communicate in English is vital since the employees will communicate in English with their colleagues from other countries. Additionally, the companies will conduct trainings for human resources development in English. Hence, “English becomes an important tool for developing employees’ career” (Hatmanto, 2010). In other words, people will less likely to be successful in developing their careers unless they master English.
